Hi,
It depends on what you're looking for. I was only in Machala for about a day and a half but had some extreme series of events that were part of the reason I moved to Cuenca. My friends stayed on there, and seem to have a love-hate relationship with it--kind of like everywhere in Ecuador.

For safety, Machala is not the place to go. It will be more dangerous than other parts for sure. But you're sure to meet good people who will try to look out for you also. It will be extremely hot and humid, dirty and dusty. But if you can live with that, then give it a shot. You will be one of the few foreigners there, giving you an authentic experience. Check my blog for info on Ecuador and why I didn't stay in Machala.

Jon

Hi,
I am thinking of teaching EFL in Ecuador next Spring, and was looking into Machala, the town you mentioned that you said you moved away from. Would you recommend going there, or no?
